My heart breaks for Afghan women and the men whom they love.
When will we see the end of patriarchal violence, often perpetrated in the name of god – here, there and nearly everywhere?
Almost 30 years ago, the United Nations recognized women’s fundamental human right to live free of violence. The UN defined violence against women as:
any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life (UN Women 1993).
And still here we are. Again. And again. And again.
